Epilepsy — More Common Than You Think

Epilepsy (mirgi) is a neurological condition where the brain's electrical activity becomes disrupted, causing seizures (fits). It affects about 1 in 100 people in India — making it one of the most common neurological conditions. Yet it is often misunderstood, stigmatised, and undertreated.

The good news: with the right diagnosis and medication, up to 70% of people with epilepsy can become seizure-free. At Brain & Beans, Dr. Swati Garg provides EEG-based accurate diagnosis, evidence-based treatment, and structured long-term care.

"Mirgi ek bimari hai, abhishap nahi" — मिर्गी एक neurological बीमारी है। सही दवाई से 70% मरीज़ ठीक हो सकते हैं। (Epilepsy is a neurological condition — with the right medicine, 70% of patients become seizure-free.)

  • Staring spells — blank staring for seconds
  • Sudden jerking of arms or legs

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is epilepsy? (Mirgi kya hai?)
Epilepsy is a brain condition where abnormal electrical activity causes repeated seizures (fits). It can affect people of all ages. It is NOT caused by black magic or evil spirits — it is a medical condition that responds well to treatment.
Is epilepsy dangerous? (Mirgi khatarnak hai kya?)
A single seizure usually passes on its own within 1–2 minutes and is not life-threatening. However, seizures during driving, swimming, or at heights can be dangerous. Status epilepticus (prolonged seizure) is a medical emergency. Regular medication prevents most seizures.
Can epilepsy be cured? (Kya mirgi thik ho sakti hai?)
Many patients achieve complete seizure control with medication. After being seizure-free for 2 years or more, some can gradually reduce and stop medicines under doctor supervision. The outcome depends on the type of epilepsy and how well it responds to treatment.
What should I do when someone has a fit?
Stay calm. Lay the person on their side (recovery position). Clear the area of sharp objects. Do NOT put anything in their mouth. Time the seizure. If it lasts more than 5 minutes or they do not regain consciousness, call emergency services.
Can women with epilepsy get pregnant?
Yes — most women with epilepsy can have healthy pregnancies with proper planning. Some anti-epileptic medicines need adjustment before conception. Dr. Swati Garg provides pre-conception counselling and pregnancy-safe medication guidance.
