Understanding Dialysis

Dialysis is a treatment that does the work your kidneys can no longer do — filtering waste, excess water, and toxins from your blood. It becomes necessary when kidneys are functioning at a very low level (usually below 10–15% of normal).

Starting dialysis is a big life decision. At Brain & Beans, Dr. Harsheel Gupta guides you through every step — from understanding when dialysis is needed, choosing the right type, preparing your body, and optimising your treatment once started.

"Dialysis se daro mat — samjho" — Dialysis एक medical treatment है, डर की नहीं बल्कि समझ की ज़रूरत है। (Dialysis is a medical treatment — understanding it is the first step.)

⚠️ When is Dialysis Needed?

  • Creatinine very high with symptoms like breathlessness or vomiting
  • GFR (kidney function) below 10–15 mL/min
  • Severe fluid overload not responding to medicines
  • Dangerous potassium levels (hyperkalemia)
  • Acute kidney injury not recovering
  • Advised by your nephrologist based on reports

Experiencing these symptoms? Don't wait.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How does dialysis work? (Dialysis kaise kaam karti hai?)
Dialysis filters your blood artificially when kidneys cannot do it. In haemodialysis, blood is taken out through a needle, filtered through a machine, and returned to the body. In peritoneal dialysis, a fluid is put into the abdomen to absorb toxins, then drained out.
How many times a week is dialysis needed?
Haemodialysis is usually done 3 times a week, for about 3–4 hours each session. Peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) is done daily at home, multiple times a day. The frequency depends on your kidney function and individual needs.
Can dialysis be done at home? (Kya dialysis ghar pe ho sakti hai?)
Yes — peritoneal dialysis (CAPD/APD) can be done at home after proper training. It gives more flexibility and independence compared to hospital-based haemodialysis. Dr. Harsheel can advise if you are a suitable candidate.
Is dialysis painful?
Haemodialysis involves needle insertion which some patients find mildly uncomfortable. The dialysis itself is not painful. Most patients read, rest, or watch TV during sessions. Peritoneal dialysis done at home is generally well-tolerated.
Can kidneys recover after starting dialysis?
In acute kidney injury, yes — kidneys can sometimes recover and dialysis can be stopped. In chronic end-stage CKD, recovery is unlikely without a kidney transplant. This is why early specialist care to delay dialysis is so important.
